Amelia

Story

This children book was a project I decided to take on my last year of university. It is about a little girl who lives in a teapot and feels a little bit lonely. One night, she decides to go in search of friends. I decided to do this as a way to teach kids how it might take a few tries to find good friends, that rejection happens, and that it is okay to be alone. As Amelia goes through her adventure, she encounters a couple of creatures who don’t want to be friends with her, but instead of wallowing in her sadness, Amelia shrugs it off and continues. Even when life gets hard and she falls into the river in the storm, she resurfaces and finds that she was actually never alone. I made Amelia small to be able to have interesting landscapes such as the teacup house in between mushrooms and leaves, or fox mountain, which in reality is just a fox. Or even when faced with the storm, Amelia’s umbrella is a clover. It makes the story more endearing than if it was about a normal sized kid trying to befriend other kids. It makes the idea of rejection more manageable too.
